Community Building
Drum Circles are Good for You and Your Community

A facilitated drum circle is distinct from specific cultural activities such as African drumming, Samba band, Taiko drumming etc where participants have to learn parts and the emphasis is on getting it right.

A drum circle is a group of people coming together to create in the moment music, using hand drums and percussion instruments. A drum circle is not a percussion ensemble performing a prepared piece of music, nor a drumming class led by a teacher.

A drum circle creates original music, it does not seek to recreate music it has played before. The focus is very much on personal and group interaction, communication, listening, contributing and creating together.

Playing the drum is one of the oldest forms of expression, playing with others is incredibly satisfying.

"We're wired for rhythm. Our hearts are beating. We're walking to a beat. We're breathing to a beat. Our neurons are firing in a synchronized rhythm. We're already a symphony."

— Christine Stevens, music therapist
